The harp is a key musical symbol in both Wales and Senegal, and both nations also share a\u00a0bardic tradition of intricate oral history, expressed through music, song and verse. Their delicate interweaving of both sets of strings &#8211; from the traditional West African kora, and a modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camac-harps.com\/blog\/en\/harps-en\/electric\/the-big-blue-47\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blue harp<\/a> &#8211; continue to fascinate and entrance world music audiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Clychau Dibon, Catrin and Seckou&#8217;s first album (2013), won\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frootsmag.com\/content\/critpoll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener undefined\" data-content=\"http:\/\/www.frootsmag.com\/content\/critpoll\/\" data-type=\"external\">fRoots Album Of The Year<\/a>, was nominated for two\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b03ldc63\/profiles\/winners-nominees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener undefined\" data-content=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b03ldc63\/profiles\/winners-nominees\" data-type=\"external\">BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards<\/a>\u00a0for Best Duo and Best Traditional Track, and was featured in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.songlines.co.uk\/world-music-news\/2013\/10\/songlines-best-albums-2013-announced\/?wpmp_switcher=mobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener undefined\" data-content=\"http:\/\/www.songlines.co.uk\/world-music-news\/2013\/10\/songlines-best-albums-2013-announced\/?wpmp_switcher=mobile\" data-type=\"external\">Songlines Magazine\u00a0Top Ten Albums of 2013<\/a>. Their second album &#8211; SOAR &#8211; is out this month, with music roving from the Goldberg Variations, to traditional African music via \u00a0 Welsh and other Western folk and contemporary influences. It&#8217;s a thoughtful exploration of emotional and physical journeys, of many different kinds. &#8216;1677&#8217; refers to the French invasion and subsequent colonisation of the Senegalese <span lang=\"fr\" title=\"French language text\">\u00cele de Gor\u00e9e, which then became a central port for the slave trade.\u00a0<\/span>Cofiwch Dryweryn (&#8220;Remember Tryweryn&#8221;), the album&#8217;s last track, remembers the 1965 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capel_Celyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drowning of the Welsh village\u00a0Capel Celyn<\/a>, to create a reservoir providing water for the English city of Liverpool. &#8216;T\u00e9ranga-Bah&#8217; is about the ritual of hospitality, with Keita singing &#8220;open the gate&#8221; repeatedly at the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Presiding over the album as a whole is the motif of the\u00a0osprey, the sea bird that migrates over the sea, between west Africa and northern Europe.\u00a0After centuries of persecution as vermin and near-extinction in the British isles, the osprey started breeding again in Wales. The opening track Clarach is named after the first Dyfi osprey in modern times to be born in Wales who subsequently returned from West Africa as an adult to rear her own chicks in the UK. 2011 saw the first osprey chicks to hatch in the Dyfi Valley, Mid Wales, since 1604.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 23\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI like the bird\u2019s freedom to migrate\u00a0to different places,\u201d Seckou says. \u201cThey soar their way, and nothing stops them, but they know where they\u2019re heading, where they\u2019ll find peace and be happy.
