He is the\u00a0father of the famous\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Barzaz_Breiz_1846\">Barzaz-Breiz<\/a>, <\/em>a collection of Breton traditional songs first<em>\u00a0<\/em>edited in\u00a01839. The airs collected by La Villemarqu\u00e9 have\u00a0become a key reference in Breton cultural studies, have been arranged numerous times for the (lever) harp, and have been taken up by several generations of harpists. To mark the occasion, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.univ-brest.fr\/crbc\">Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0Universit\u00e9 de Bretagne Occidentale in\u00a0Brest is organising a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.univ-brest.fr\/crbc\/outils\/Les_actualites\/Au-dela-du-Barzaz-Breiz--Theodore-Hersart-de-La-Villemarque.cid109342\" target=\"_blank\">colloquium<\/a>\u00a0in collaboration with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdp29.fr\/fr\/presentation-kernault\">Manoir de Kernault<\/a>\u00a0in Mellac. The colloquium\u00a0will be held at the Manoir, a national heritage site in the Finist\u00e8re region of Brittany, on November 12th and 13th, 2015. In addition to the academic presentations about the life and work of La Villemarqu\u00e9, the project&#8217;s organisers have included\u00a0a musical aspect in the form of a concert on Friday, November 13th, at 6:30PM in Mellac church.<\/p>\n<p>This concert, &#8220;(Re)interpret the songs of <em>Barzaz-Breiz<\/em>&#8220;, will be in three parts. Firstly, we will hear examples of how the songs would have been performed at the time of their first publication, both in\u00a0cultivated circles and in the popular oral tradition. Extracts from the songs will follow,\u00a0as they were reimagined from 1930 to the present day, by many instrumentalists and singers. Finally, there will be a work for string quartet and voice, commissioned from Patrick Choquet, and performed for the occasion by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensemblesillages.com\/?lang=fr\">Sillages<\/a>\u00a0ensemble. The Breton song\u00a0was supplemented by a French translation, and a musical arrangement for piano or harp. This arrangement was the work of\u00a0Julie Feuillet-Dumus, one of the great harpists of the age. Born in Brussels in 1809, she was a De Weissenbruch, part of\u00a0a distinguished family of Belgian printers and music editors. She\u00a0had a fine career as a concert harpist, performing repeatedly all over Europe in the middle of the 1930s.
