But like many harpists of my generation I was hugely influenced by Stivell\u2019s Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique, and later Myrdhin\u2019s Courir le Guilledou and Harp In Aquarius\u2026Oppermann\u2019s fusion with rock and blues, too. I was blown away when I heard these artists. The sounds were magical, they transported me to another world. I was already playing on a harp with nylon strings, but without question I just had to try the metal strings too! Camac made me a metal-strung harp in the early 90s, I\u2019m glad to say. It also transformed my playing, because in order to be able to play on both types of harp I decided to play with my nails in the right hand, and without them in the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s not just the contrasting colours of metal and nylon strings that make Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric\u2019s music stand out. \u201cI\u2019m really not predisposed to any one type of music\u201d, he explains. \u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of Purcell, of early music and classical music in general\u2026and also of ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd\u2026some of my music draws inspiration from the electric guitar and tries to bring that sound out on the harp, like \u201cElectricStar\u201d. I might be enjoying jazz, rock, Stravinsky\u2026I\u2019ve always devoured music\u2019s variety. EllesSeules brings together some of the artist\u2019s favourite compositions from throughout his career and, as its title (\u201cThey Alone\u201d) suggests, recreates his unique oeuvre on three harps alone: \u201cI wanted to combine the electric harp, the nylon-strung harp and the metal-strung harp because they each take us to completely different worlds. It\u2019s an album about harps, not the harp. Harps are so varied across the world, and so are their sounds. I thought I could distil some of that into an auto-production. Listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/fredericbougouin\/ozone-nfre-extrait?utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_campaign=wtshare&amp;utm_medium=widget&amp;utm_content=https%253A%252F%252Fsoundcloud.com%252Ffredericbougouin%252Fozone-nfre-extrait\">Ozone N\u2019Fr\u00e9<\/a>, a track with powerful African influences, if you didn\u2019t already know it\u2019s a harp track, you wouldn\u2019t necessarily know. \u201cDon\u2019t get me wrong, I really love direct performance\u201d, says Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric. \u201cThe direct attack of a harp is irreplaceable &#8211; you can model it, but it\u2019s never the same, I don\u2019t think so anyway. So very natural harp sounds are a big part of EllesSeules. But I try to put these together with transformed sounds, and then the audience can discover the harp in ways they never previously imagined. I always try not only to take the audience on a varied journey, but to surprise them. Travel is about discovery, right?
