Internationally renowned harp and electronica duo FitkinWall (comprising harpist Ruth Wall and composer\/performer Graham Fitkin, are about to embark on the second leg of the UK tour of their critically acclaimed<\/a> new show: Harpland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The immersive presentation explores themes of migration, loss and longing:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur planet houses over 8 billion humans at the moment, and we move around an<\/i><\/span>awful lot. Migration is not new. It\u2019s been going on for millennia. The reasons for <\/i><\/span>migration may be geological, climate based, oppressive, work related or voluntary.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Highland-native Ruth Wall\u2019s explorations into traditional Gaelic song tunes\u00a0 have unearthed a wealth of music that has particular focus on migration within Scotland and the Highland Clearances:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis performance focuses on one small aspect of migration, the eviction and <\/i><\/span>subsequent migration of farmers and crofters from the Scottish highlands during the <\/i><\/span>Clearances.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

As only FitkinWall can, they have created a\u00a0 heady mix of the ancient and the modern, creating\u00a0 new work using these Scottish melodies, but \u201cremoulded and recomposed\u201d and interspersed with words from recent migrants in to Scotland. <\/i>These fragments of folkloric material undergo surprising transformations into the searing, energetic music that is Fitkin\u2019s signature. To complete this immersive experience,\u00a0 the performance will feature a specially commissioned light installation by the extraordinary artist Peter Freeman.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The London Jazz News has said of Ruth\u2019s harp playing: “The harp is luminous, pastoral and urban at the same time under Wall\u2019s fingers, she pushes the instrument to its limits.. the sound is immaculate.\u201d<\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this show, Ruth\u2019s performs on three different harps – Gaelic wire-strung, Bray and Camac Electro harps.\u00a0 This is in itself emblematic of the way in which their work combines the very old with the very new. A sound world which is rooted in Ruth\u2019s passion for the highly ornamented\u00a0 traditional Scottish tunes, combined with cutting edge sonic and visual elements. As\u00a0 a complement to the magic of Ruth\u2019s playing, Graham uses a Moog Voyager, Ableton and various FX modules.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As FitkinWall\u00a0 tell us: \u201cThe melodies are still there but distilled.\u201d <\/i>You can hear an excerpt here of the haunting \u2018Gently unfolding\u2019 tune, \u2018Uist\u2019 and gain a sense of this fragile, but vital, utterly unique sound world.<\/span><\/p>\n
