His style is rich in nuance and expressiveness, drawing listeners into a captivating sound world. This program explores the development of the harp in the 20th and 21st centuries, featuring works by Marcel Tournier, Gabriel Faur\u00e9, Andr\u00e9 Jolivet, Bruno Mantovani, and Takashi Yoshimatsu. What truly sets this recital apart, however, are Cara\u2019s own arrangements of several Debussy masterpieces. His interpretation of Debussy&#8217;s evocative pieces\u2014 &#8220;Hommage \u00e0 Rameau,&#8221; &#8220;Soir\u00e9e dans Grenade,&#8221; and &#8220;La Plus que Lente&#8221;\u2014highlights not just his technical mastery but also his intense creativity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"gdpr_opt_in\" data-cc-enable=\"youtube\">\n<div class=\"gdpr_opt_in__inner\">I want to enable video content and agree that data will be loaded from Google (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camac-harps.com\/blog\/en\/news\/an-extramusical-trance-marcel-cara-and-resurgence\/\" target=\"_blank\">Privacy Policy<\/a>).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"video_container\">\n<div class=\"video_container__inner\"><iframe title=\"Claude Debussy: Two &quot;Estampes&quot;, Marcel Cara\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" alt-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/4_rDCVw5m2g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These three Debussy pieces form the centrepiece of the recital; after all, it was Debussy\u2014particularly the Trio Sonata he first heard at age six\u2014that initially inspired him to take up the harp. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe three pieces presented on this disc are the \u2018keystone\u2019 of this programme and it would have been unthinkable to realise this project without the presence of one of his works.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcel elaborates on the profound inspiration that Debussy instills in him. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAbove all, Debussy is the composer I admire the most. When I listen to his Images for Orchestra l.122 (Ib\u00e9ria and Rondes de Printemps), I literally find myself in a state that I would describe as an \u2018extramusical trance\u2019. Cara draws together the sultry essence of Soir\u00e9e in Grenade and the highly visual inspirations from Jean Cras&#8217;s Deux impromptus; Tournier&#8217;s seminal Sonatine, written between the world wars, evokes feelings of reverie and nostalgia. In contrast, Faur\u00e9&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Une Ch\u00e2telaine en sa tour, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like Debussy\u2019s homage to Rameau, imparts a sense of post-romantic sadness, a paean to a world that was on the brink of vanishing utterly.\u00a0 Whereas works like Jolivet&#8217;s 1965 Pr\u00e9lude and Mantovani&#8217;s Tocar (2007) introduce a\u00a0 more stringent language and a more percussive approach to the harp which have a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cdark and obsessive character.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what is it about the harp that makes it so apt to express all these ideas?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that resonance is the main aspect of this programme. It is clear that the sound potential of the harp allowed Marcel Tournier and Claude Debussy to best express the impressionist imagination in their works. This principle of resonance is also one of the main characteristics of Debussy&#8217;s piano work, where the use of the pedal was revolutionised. [&#8230;]<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each work here uses a harmonic process based on different resonance groups, a kind of \u2018column\u2019 of vibration that repeatedly emphasises the medium-low register of the instrument. This requires the performer to stop the sound immediately only at very rare moments, thus giving the listener time to enjoy each of the different atmospheres.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for Marcel Cara, the unifying ideal of this album is Debussy and the lasting power of his creativity:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is fascinating that this artistic movement invented almost 120 years ago, still influences art in our time. Debussy is so universal that there is no composer today who has not been somewhat inspired by his musical revolution, his new conception of time and his relationship to timbre.
