It begins with Ghislaine&#8217;s solo transcription of the first book of Rameau&#8217;s Pi\u00e8ces de clavecin, before branching out into chamber music, Debussy and Saint-Sa\u00ebns. It was Saint-Sa\u00ebns who first edited the Pi\u00e8ces de clavecin, in 1895; Debussy was also an enthusiastic supporter of the revival of interest in Rameau. &#8220;So it is a collection of different homages to Rameau&#8221;, Ghislaine explains, &#8220;as well as my own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you want to bring out a harp disc of impressive musical substance\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0not only of works that have been recorded eight million times before, it is practically impossible to avoid transcription. Nor is there much reason why you would want to: the lessons of history inform the present, but purism for its own sake arguably cuts off its nose to spite its face. &#8220;Harpists have played transcriptions ever since the dawn of the instrument&#8217;s existence&#8221;, Ghislaine remarks. &#8220;Not just because of a paucity of original repertoire, but because the harp is an ancient instrument and it was much more common to adapt and improvise in early music.&#8221; The question is not about transcription per se &#8211; a work of art does not have to be a museum piece &#8211; but how to do it well.\u00a0Rameau&#8217;s delicate, refined music adapts beautifully to the sound of the harp.<\/p>\n<p>Ghislaine is accompanied in this lovely record by her colleagues from her\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trioantara.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trio Antara<\/a>, Odile Auboin and Emmanuelle Oph\u00e8le, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alexandrebrussilovsky.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexandre Brussilovsky<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beautiful disc of new Rameau transcriptions, and related repertoire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":327,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[552],"tags":[813,827,824],"class_list":["post-326","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-artists","tag-early-music","tag-recordings"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<title>Ghislaine Petit-Volta: Hommage \u00e0 Rameau -
