The Art of the Electric Harp: a series of videos by Aurélie Barbé

Aurélie Barbé is a long-time friend of Camac; in fact, she recently lent her musical creations to the series of videos we created to introduce you to our new and improved manufacturing workshops. Aurélie is a versatile harpist and composer, a gold medalist of the CRR de Caen, and a graduate of the Sorbonne in Paris.

She has performed and composed with various groups, including Naccara (6 harps, double bass, and percussion), the electro-pop group Avallon, and has collaborated with musicians such as violinist Damien Michelozzi. She has explored a wealth of musical genres, from contemporary, minimalist, and electro-acoustic music, and has released the album ‘Terralone’ and her 2024 EP ‘Clameurs’.

Aurélie Barbé is a member of the association “Les signes de l’arc,” which works to disseminate and promote contemporary music for harp. She is constantly innovating with her electric harp and enjoys sharing and passing on the fruits of her explorations.

In this vein, in 2020, she was awarded the prestigious Gisèle Tissier-Grandpierre Foundation Award. The foundation’s support has enabled Aurélie to realise a series of video interviews in which she explores the work of her fellow electro-harpists:

“I noticed harpists’ interest in the electric harp and the many questions they had, so I wanted to provide some answers by interviewing artists I admire who have embraced the electric harp in different ways. Aurélie says, “ We discuss technical aspects (amplification and effects pedals) as well as aesthetic and musical issues.”

Each interview, beautifully filmed and realised by Aurélie, is based around the work of an individual electric harpist. In the course of the series so far, she has explored the work of some of the electric harpists she most admires, yet tit represents an incredibly diverse group of artists:

“The first musician I interviewed was Hélène Breschand, a multi-talented artist (composer, improviser, performer…) whom I greatly admire. Next, I had the pleasure of meeting Rafaelle Rinaudo (who is a massive hit with her band Nout!) and Milla Leika (a singer, harpist and composer who plays two harps on stage).”

And who is next?

“The video that has just been released features an interview with Lena Woods, a rock and electro singer and harpist!”

What we value about this series is that, in a world where content often becomes shorter and more punchy, these films are thorough and detailed, providing a genuinely captivating insight into the artists’ work.

“These are fairly long, intimate videos that take us into the world of each musician. We take the time to talk about the artists’ journey and evolution, and their approach to music and the profession of musician.”

Despite hours spent on filming and editing these wonderful films, Aurelie is still working intently on her personal projects and pursuits.

“I released my EP Clameurs in 2024, and I’m continuing to compose for electric harp and machines for a future EP.

I’m lucky enough to have access to an electric harp at the CRR in Versailles where I teach, and I invite any interested students to come and sign up!”
