  • Ireland – one of the harp’s most famous homes – has held an October National Harp Day for many years. This will take place on October 17th, celebrating the incredible Irish harp tradition throughout the land.

Elsewhere, the virtuoso concert harpist Alexander Boldachev has been inspired by Ireland, and quite a bit more besides. He has a new idea: World Harp Day.

The pedal harp now also has a history of at least 300 years to its name, and one effect of the Corona crisis is that Alexander has found himself with time to think about this. “Many of us cannot be much on stage at the moment”, he says, “but it will take more than a virus to conquer music.

All over the world, musicians have been highlighting music’s importance and power in so many fantastic, inspiring ways. I’ve been directly inspired by this in itself, and it also got me thinking more about the harp in this time of crisis. Our instrument can do so many things; it’s not seen as all that portable, but compared to most other polyphonic instruments it’s incredibly portable. I’ve just been taking my harp through Switzerland on trains, walking…and playing for people in many different locations.

Following these reflections about the harp’s versatility, I decided to organise World Harp Day to raise awareness of the harp as an instrument. UNESCO and the United Nations are already informed, and waiting for the proof that the harp community is huge – and connected!”

Speaking of unity: we are happy to be joining our colleagues in harp making to support Alexander in the launch of his new venture. There are several ways you can take part in World Harp Day. Post a video of yourself and your harp on social media, #worldharpday. You can also apply to take part in the 24-hour marathon livestream. Keep an eye on Alexander’s site and networks for further developments.

The first of these is his “Parisian Waltz” from the Odyssey Collection, playable on 27-string small harps with or without levers. The second is “The Minstrel’s Suicide“, his once-heard, never-forgotten jazz take on a famous work by John Thomas.
