  • The long-established national competitions in London will take place, as ever, on the UK May bank holiday weekend: Sunday, May 5th and Monday, May 6th at North Bank House. We’re delighted to be welcoming Stephen Fitzpatrick and Emma Ramsdale to be our illustrious jury members. Stephen, British in origin, is now Principal Harpist at the Berlin Staatskapelle under Daniel Barenboim, and is also Professor of Harp at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Emma is an ABRSM diploma examiner, and has taught at Junior Guildhall and many schools during her teaching career, while also pursuing a busy performing schedule.

North London offers competitions for every age and stage, from grade 1 (ABRSM / Trinity syllabuses), to young professional. There are also the increasingly popular junior and senior chamber music classes. The Camac Harp Competition is open to pedal harpists of conservatoire standard and beyond, studying or resident in the UK / Republic of Ireland and aged up to 30.

We are very pleased that once again we can offer a great professional opportunity to the laureate of this competition, in the form of a paid lunchtime recital at the Proms at St Jude’s. Candidates should therefore be available for the scheduled concert date of Friday, June 21st 2019, at lunchtime in London NW11).

Registration is via the online form of the North London festival, which will be activated early in 2019. Meanwhile, you can prepare your programmes using the information in the competition flyer, and register your interest using this form. We will then let you know once registrations are open!

Closing date for applications: Monday, April 1st 2019

  • Held in Serbia every two years, this long-running contest is a fixture of the Balkan harp calendar – and also those of other instruments. Petar Konjović is one of Serbia’s most distinguished twentieth-century musicians, and this extensive competition has been held in his honour, by the Association of Music and Ballet Pedagogues of Serbia, since 1991. It is a great opportunity for students, with broad range of categories from young beginners, to professionals under the age of twenty-five.

We have supported the harp section for over a decade, and the great artistic direction and organisational work of  Staša Mirković-Grujić. She has now passed on the baton to Mina Momčilović, who is your new point of contact for 2019.

We have summarised the competition information in English here. Closing date for applications is March 30, 2019.

  • Dasson An Delenn is our competition dedicated to the lever harp in Brittany. 2019’s edition will take place on June 8th and 9th, at the Brest Conservatoire. The competition is open to harpists aged under 21, of any nationality. Candidates will perform a (public) programme inspired by Breton music, be this original music, or arrangements. The competition hopes to offer students and teachers a supportive and enjoyable weekend in the service of the lever harp, and with plenty of opportunity to meet each other, exchange ideas and make friends.

We would like warmly to thank the directors and staff of the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Brest métropole, the Town of Brest, the civic authorities of the Finistère region, the DRAC of Brittany, and our partners Savarez and Galli strings, for their support for our initiative.

Non-French speakers can see our English summary of the competition on the blog, or contact Camac Artist Relations for support.

  • Caroline Lizotte needs little introduction to harpists interested in the electroacoustic Blue Harp. We were proud to make her a mirrored-chrome Big Blue in 2015, and her extensive, award-winning body of compositions for harp already features the instrument: ‘Danses Métales’ op. 47 for electric harp (in process for edition), or ‘Stellae Saltantem’ op. 49, a duo for electroacoustic and acoustic harps. Other compositions also incorporate amplification and sound processing: most famously ‘Concerto Techno’ op. 40 for harp, live techno and orchestra.

Supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Caroline will soon give the world premiere of her new Sonata for electroacoustic harp. She will perform this at none other than Camac Harps Paris, on Sunday, June 23rd (6PM). The programme will also include some of her other works: Concerto Techno with Étienne Ratthé / live techno, and Raga for two harps with Marta Power.

  • Following the success of the first Taiwan International Harp Festival in 2015, the second edition will continue to explore cross-genre, multidisciplinary performance. Directed by Shannon Cheih, Harp Rise II will take place between June 25 – 30, 2019, at the Eslite Performance Hall in Tapei. It’s your chance to experience the harp + … dance, poetry, drama, literature, multimedia images, electronic music, lighting design, and more. There will be concerts, masterclasses, world premieres, lectures, and even flash mob performances – and it will also be a great opportunity for harpists across the Asia-Pacific region to come together and exchange ideas.

The festival will also feature the Camac Prize Taiwan, a competition with both lever and pedal categories, across youth – advanced – open.

  • Camac Germany is looking forward working with Nikolaz Cadoret, Ruth Rojahn, and her class at the Musikschule der Hofer Symphoniker. The music school is in fact the only one in Germany to be run by a professional orchestra, and is famous both for its high artistic and pedagogic level, and its contribution to the wider community. Classes are available for everyone, from babies to adults and OAPs. The instrumental roster covers almost every classical instrument, and there is special focus on playing music together in groups. The music school also provides around three hundred performances a year for the residents of Hof to enjoy – including ours, on June 29th!

  • Your lever harp summer is not complete without the Rencontres internationales de harpes celtiques, which take place annually in Dinan, Brittany. You can enjoy a wonderful programme from stars of the lever harp from all over the world, and playing everything from Latin jazz, to rock! There is also a great variety of courses, which you can explore and sign up for here

Dinan is not far from our ateliers in Mouzeil, and we always bring a particularly extensive lever harp exhibition to the festival’s salon des luthiers. You’ll find us there between July 12th – 14th, at no less than the 36th edition of the festival.
